在科技英语中，develop是一个非常活跃的词，它既可用作及物动词，亦可用作不及物动词。由于它含义繁多，搭配能力强，使用频率又极高，所以常使译者颇为犯难，每每为确定其准确的词义而煞费心机。有些译者自认为是个熟词而不注意其使用特点，机械地照搬自己头脑中已熟知的某个词义，或信手从词典中拈出某个词义（最常见的是千篇一律地将其译为“发展”），结果译文不是牵强附会，令人不忍卒读，就是逻辑混乱，令人不知所云。
Develop一词有两个最基本的含义。一个是“发展”，即指事物由小到大、由简单到复杂、由低级到高级的变化；另一个是“产生”，即指事物从无到有的过程。在实际翻译过程中，译者应根据不同情况，将这两个基本词义加以引申和衍化。在很多情况下，为适应翻译表达的实际需要，使译文逻辑畅通、文从字顺，译者还应从这两个基本词义出发而进行发挥和创新。总之，只要符合它的基本意义，译笔尽可以千变万化，以求得理想的译文。
翻译实践表明，develop的确切含义，主要应根据具体语言环境及其前后的搭配关系加以选择和确定。笔者长期从事科技翻译，现提供一些译例，并就此讨论翻译过程中词义理解和选择的一个原则（词义理解和选择有许多原则），也许对读者多少有点启迪作用。
1.Develop用作及物动词
Develop用作及物动词时，和其后面的成分构成动（谓）宾关系（当develop以被动态形式出现时，尽管从形式上看和其前面的成分构成主谓关系，但在选择和确定其词义时仍可按动宾搭配关系看待）。试看
以下各例：
(1)Another project underway is the use of genetic engineering techniques to develop a vaccine for some diseases.
正在进行的另一个项目是利用遗传工程技术研制某些疾病的疫苗。
(2)What man should really be proud of is his brain, which has enabled him to develop machines that go at fantastic speeds.

(5)The Italian Navy, though facing the same problem as the Royal Navy, has developed a totally different philosophy regarding last-ditch antimissile defense.
